Beyond the Padlock: New Ideas in Browser Security UI: Johnathan Nightingale

September 15th, 3:40pm - 4:40pm (PDT)

Video from this session will be streamed online. Check here for your local time.

Overview

Security UI in the browser is tricky. Users want us to take an active role, defending them from malicious sites and telling them when they're safe. But it seems that the same users will click through any warning, and ignore every indicator. And really, who can blame them? The security UI out there these days is mostly annoying, useless, or both. It doesn't have to be that way.

In this talk, Johnathan will discuss how we've approached security UI in Firefox 3. It has meant re-thinking some of the core elements of our current security story, but we think it also means a better, safer experience for our users. He'll also discuss ongoing efforts by groups like the W3C to develop the next generation of security user experience, and how they've attempted to avoid the mistakes of the past.
